The Monthly Edition: Emerald May

The emerald gem is known for its luscious, timeless and decadent deep green colour. Here’s how to inspire your interior palette with this month’s dazzling birthstone.

From fertility to youthfulness, the deep green of the emerald has represented many themes and powers throughout history.

Ancient Egyptians mined the jewels as early as 330BC, with Cleopatra herself declaring a profound love for all emeralds. In fact, she claimed ownership of all of Egypt’s mines during her reign. That’s one way to expand your jewellery collection!

Emeralds were often found on the necks of Ancient Egyptian mummies. The gems were part of the burial to symbolise eternal youth and protection.

The Muzo Indians of Colombia were also possessors of emerald mines. Their mines were so prized and well-hidden that the Spanish conquistadors were unable to find them for almost 20 years.

It is estimated that some of the world’s oldest emeralds are almost 3 billion years old! These gems truly are timeless 😉

Nowadays, the emerald is gifted as a sign of loyalty, peace and beauty. Despite Elizabeth Taylor’s famous pendant brooch selling for over $6.5 million in 2011, there are many emeralds on the market for more affordable purchase – or you can take it from us and decorate with the emerald in an entirely different way…

How to style with emerald green

When buying an emerald, the general guideline is the deeper the green, the more valuable the stone. Take this philosophy when incorporating emerald green into your interior palette.

Emerald is unlike other overwhelming greens. It’s not lime or mint. Emerald is a deep tone that is subtle yet luxurious. It complements metallic and blush tones alike. Think Gatsby elegance for an Art Deco interior.

The decadent hue is making a huge comeback in contemporary themes and has even been dubbed as the ‘new black’. For a standout look, opt for emerald green on your kitchen cabinets paired with gold or brass handles. Bliss.

Emerald green is divine when showcased in a velvet finish. Intensify a focal point in your living room with a velvety sofa or armchair.

For a more seasonal approach, serve your hearty meals on emerald-hued dinner plates and platters or enrich your palette underfoot with a delightful shaggy or designer rug. Switch up the comfort-factor with textured emerald cushions and throws to make guests green with envy!
