How to make your different styles work together

Coco Dining Table, Ash

Living with someone can mean compromise, but who wants to compromise on style? You styles might not work together all the time, but they can still work together in your home.

When you live with someone, it’s unlikely you agree on everything and style is often one of these things. It can feel impossible to create one look for your home with your two (or more!) conflicting preferences.

There are a few ways you can work around this to create a space that the whole household is happy to come home to.

Colours are a big aspect in your personal style. Everyone has their favourite colour and wants to incorporate that into their interior décor. But with conflicting colours, this can feel impossible.

There are two main ways you can go about utilising colour in your home to suit everyone’s styles.

Avoiding and exchanging

Hooper 2.5 Seater Sofa

One of the simplest ways to make sure that everyone feels at home in your space is to avoid bold colours, especially on your walls. Neutral colours are your friends here. There’s nothing wrong with beige features with the occasional colourful accent.

A friendly compromise can be plenty of coloured cushions and cushion inserts.
“It’s my week so that means the cushions are green this week.”
“OK, but for my week next week the cushions are going to be red.”

If switching up the feature colour each week just won’t work for your household, then perhaps everyone can be featured all the time.

Now, this doesn’t mean walls should be splattered with clashing colours or that zigzag blue and green rugs should be placed underneath polka dot black and gold furniture (unless, of course, this is your style).

What you can do is tone down everyone’s favourite colours into more neutral tones and hues so that they can work together. There’s no reason blue, green, black, and gold can’t all get along, but they won’t if they’re all trying to be the focus.

Just remember, you’re trying to create a style that is cohesive and work as a team when choosing your hues and tones.

Products with ambiguous style

Colour isn’t always the defining factor in when it comes to décor. Sometimes it’s an era, a location, or a lifestyle that influences your style.

If you’ve got one party who wants French Provincial-inspired design and another who longs for a coastal aesthetic, you might find yourselves butting heads.

Nils King Bed, Light Grey

The best course of action is to work with ambiguous style. Is it Scandi? Coastal? Industrial? Modern? Classic? Provincial? Who knows?

If you can both/all see your styles reflected in your furniture and homewares, then don’t hesitate! You can say you’ve come up with a new style — Provincial Coastal. Scandi Country Classic. Shabby Eclectic Industrial Chic.

Non-permanent looks

We’ve already looked at how cushions can be a great way to have a style that is easily swapped out for another, but it doesn’t have to end there. You can extend this to every aspect of your décor if you can find a comfortable compromise.

Instead of painting a bold feature wall that one of you loves but another… doesn’t, use artworks instead. A plain wall and a bold piece of artwork can keep everyone happy and can you can easily swap it out later if need be.

Bedhead Wall Decal

A wall decal that can be removed later, or even covered by plenty of cushions can mean a happy compromise. Not to mention it could save you a lot! Furniture inspired wall decals could be the perfect solution to your style woes. Why buy an expensive bed head that only one of you likes?

Wall decals also work wonderfully if you have little ones running around. Younger members of the family change their styles more than anyone else, so changing your home’s aesthetic only for your young one to change their mind a month later can be a bit troublesome. Kids’ wall decals let them have their fun without compromising your grown-up style.

Look to colourful throws instead of colourful couches for the same reason. There’s no point in investing in something that you don’t love. Buy a couch that will outlast your styles and accent it with your favourite current trend. Maybe a blue and green zigzag throw blanket would look great on a cream or grey couch. Who knows?
