Day 9: Alcohol-Free Mulled Cranberry

AF hero

Tis the season for celebration. And it’s so much fun. But it can become little relentless if you don’t take care of yourself. An alcohol-free night provides a haven amidst all the revelry. Especially when it offers delicious homemade mulled cranberry!

Christmas parties, festive luncheons, catchups with friends, a cheeky Tuesday glass of bubbly that finds you belting out a Dolly Parton/Kenny Rodgers medley with Bob from Finance at 3am. No doubt about it – the jolly season is pretty darn fun. It’s irresistible. And inescapable!

With all the frivolity and the infallibly placed mistletoe and the flashing reindeer ears(?), it’s easy to let yourself run away with… let’s say yourself. (Sorry, Bob.) In the whirlwind that is the silly season, an alcohol-free night can seem an oxymoron. But it may just be our Obi-Wan Kenobi.*

In the midst of all this indulgence, press the pause button, and indulge in a little sanctity. Reconnect with your sobriety for a moment of calm.

You need

  • 1 litre cranberry juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 1/2 cup cranberries
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

The how

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the juice, cinnamon stick, and cloves and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer.
  2. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, combine the cranberries, sugar, ground cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons of water and heat over medium-low heat, gently stirring, until the cranberries pop and are well coated with the sugar mixture.
  3. When cool enough to handle, thread 3 to 4 berries each on 4 decorative toothpicks or skewers. Pour the mulled cranberry juice among 4 mugs and garnish with the cranberry swizzle.
