Style Crush: We Heart The Hamptons

awesome kitchen

As winter points its icy finger in our direction, here at Zanui we’re dreaming of the beach. We’re crushing on the Hamptons’ style – indulging in airy coastal elegance infused with seaside light and the briny scent of the ocean.

There’s something decadent about the fusion of wood, rattan, and natural textiles. It screams high society – exclusive golf clubs, games of bridge and extra-marital affairs. Think the Real Housewives of New York City or any Woody Allen film.

But you don’t have to be dripping with diamonds to channel the look (or struggling with commitment issues for that matter).

The Hamptons is a spate of villages and towns in the southern fork of Long Island, New York. It’s celebrated as a holiday haunt for the rich and (in)famous (politicians, financiers, movie stars), as well as being a hideaway for the feted from the art-world.

Truman Capote, Cindy Sherman and Jackson Pollock as well as Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow, and J-Lo have made the Hamptons their home. Ocean-fronted mansions sell for up to $98 million and exude that easy charisma of luxury. Excuse us while we turn a little green.

Balancing bright and breezy with cosy charm is the key to bringing the Hamptons attitude to your home. Light becomes an inspiration as well as a defining feature in this look. If you’re not blessed with floor-to-ceiling windows (and let’s face it, not all of us are that blessed), white furniture effects an illusion of light.

A plush sofa and traditional armchairs in eggshell or pristine white open up your interiors and create a spacious aesthetic. Quirky ottomans and woven rugs on polished floorboards create a comfy haven.

Juxtapose your textures: wed luxe with coarse, old with new, cane or vintage rattan and recycled timber with soft fabrics.

White painted dressers with cane baskets represent the perfect marriage or striking lighting in abaca and wood. Sumptuous knitted throws add warmth whilst bright, striped cushions evoke nautical flair. Think casual yet chic with a quirky coastal flavour.

Look to the sea as the reference for your colour palette. Opt for soft sands, opalescent shells and neutral hues, whitewashed woods, aqua, turquoise and ocean blues. Choose a couple of accent colours to lift your look, then dress your neutral haven with charming décor accents like coarse-papered journals, coral, sea anemones, glass hurricane lamps or knotted driftwood. Enhance the ambience with floral fragrances with scented candles and vases of fresh bouquets.

The opulence, the tranquility and the Mediterranean-inspired indulgence, we love it all. Banana lounges by the pool, citrus cocktails in carved-out coconuts and chaotic love affairs … *Sigh* And from in amongst the hub of the inner city we are taking for our own.

How bout you? Does the Hamptons make your heart beat fast?
