Vivid Festival is the star attraction of Sydney in winter, but we’re not quite ready for it all to end.
We want to bring the beauty back home with us, to revel in it for months on end. Here’s how you can too…
All about colours and creative patterns, Vivid takes over the city, and reminds us that despite the grey skies of the season there’s still plenty to smile about.
So we’re bringing it home with these bright and bubbly styles, sure to whisk away the winter blues.
BOLD & BEAUTIFUL
Vivid is just that – vivid. It’s all about the wow. The festival goes big with colour and pattern, and if you want to do the same then you can’t hold back.
Our favourite Australian designers, both contemporary and retro, are doing amazing things by combining creativity with colour and form.
Iconic 60s designer, Florence Broadhurst, was a flamboyant character to say the least. Her designs are daring and dramatic.
She was all about the bold, and when it comes to styling your home it doesn’t get more marvelous than Florence Broadhurst.
Contemporary designer Christopher Vine is at home with repeating patterns that celebrate retro designs made new.
And how do we go past the pop palette of Colour Basics by Maxwell & Williams? The porcelain dinnerware range is a mix-and-match-makers’ dream.
What better way to spirit away the winter chill than with a shock of geometry – an injection of pattern to awaken the senses.
The best part about geometrics is that you don’t need to overload your look if you don’t want to (although the Vivid crew would definitely approve!). Opt for choice pieces to give your space a pop.
Old favourite printmakers, Americanflat, have countless collections dedicated to the dramatic edge and the abstract angle.
Mesmerising geometry abounds in their contemporary prints, and their wall art is just the right size to fit any space (a standard A2 can squeeze in just about anywhere).
Love pastel palette and have a penchant for pattern? Us too. We’re in love with everything ever from Aura by Tracie Ellis.
We’re a little bit dotty for spots and speckles, especially when they come in convenient wall sticker form – that’s right, they’re removable. Little Sticker Boy specialise in decals that won’t damage your walls (yay!).
Their repeating patterns of triangles, stars, and even moustaches (yes yes, very fancy) are perfect for nurseries and offices where you can channel your creativity.
TWINKLE WITH LIGHTING
The star of the show at the Vivid Festival is, of course, the lighting. The harbour is lit up, and so are we.
So for your everyday lighting we suggest an update – it’s good for the soul.
Take your look to outrageous new heights with an emphasis on the ostentatious. Silly are known for their OTT chandeliers, full of charisma and colour.
Make this one a feature in your entrance for that shock-factor, or make it a quirky statement in your living room or kid’s area for a playful impact with jaw-dropping (and disco-dance-inducing) style.
For the less adventurous we recommend Empirical Style’s range of industrial cage pendant lights. Each pendant is hand-painted with bright colour, or strung from a colourful cord, to give maximum impact.
We love the fusion of old and new – channelling the electric energy of the festival in their contrast and creativity.
The quirky creators at Suck UK must be channelling Vivid with their bright lights – made for those who like something just a little bit different.
Their brick table lamp glows with a photoluminescent pigment that casts colour across your room, while the sun jar captures the uplifted feeling of a summer day (or a night at Vivid).
If you made it to the festival this month you might be inspired to revive your home life with a little light and colour. And if you didn’t quite brave the cold, there’s always next year!
