4 Incredibly Easy Tricks For Applying Wallpaper

Wallpaper is one of the year’s top trends. It’s bold and makes a style statement in any room. But buying and applying wallpaper can be intimidating if you don’t know where to start.

Applying wallpaper is actually a lot easier than you think. There’s no need for tangles in sticky paper sheets, or spending hours squeezing out those ugly air bubbles. The time for updating your walls is now!

1. Choose a wallpaper type that’s right for you

Modern wallpaper comes in different types: pre-pasted, un-pasted and paste-the-wall to name a few!

Pre-pasted must be soaked and applied wet. This could be a little tricky for beginners! We recommend un-pasted or paste-the-wall for those trying it out for the first time.

Un-pasted requires you to roll some paste to the back of the paper sheet before applying. You’ll need a table and some special wallpaper glue, but that’s it!

Paste-the-wall paper is pretty self-explanatory 😉 But whichever option you choose, make sure you read the instructions carefully and get a friend to help you out.

2. Take time to prepare your walls before you start

Here’s the thing. You can’t just toss some sheets up and hope for the best. Take time to get your walls cleaned and ready before you start sticking.

Move your larger furniture items out of the way so you have plenty of room to do the job.

Your wall surface should be clean and flat. That means sanding it back and spack-filling holes if necessary! Remove all the dust and apply an undercoat of SHUR-STIK to make sure the sheets are easy to apply.

3. With oversized patterns, work from the middle out

Before you lay your first strip of wallpaper, use a level to mark a straight line down your wall. This plumbline will make it easier to line up the sheets correctly.

But if you’re going big and bold with your pattern it can be easier to start in the middle of your wall and work your way out. That way, the focal point of your oversized pattern will be in the centre of the wall.

4. Allow at least 5cm overhang at the top, bottom and corners

This seems obvious but allow yourself plenty of spare paper at the top and bottom of your wall before you start trimming the excess. Take your time with the task at hand to avoid silly errors.

Get those nice, neat edges by pushing the wallpaper right into the crease of the wall and using a sharp knife to make a clean cut. You can butt your knife against a straight surface like a ruler to make it even easier.
